When to book, in a five-month season
Most of the country can re-roof nine or ten months a year. The Twin Cities get about five. Every homeowner who needs a roof is competing for the same window, and understanding how that queue forms is worth more here than any amount of shingle comparison.
Why the season is what it is
Asphalt shingles seal by warmth: the adhesive strip under each course softens in the sun and bonds to the course below it, and until that happens the roof is a collection of nailed-down pieces rather than a sealed surface. Installed too cold, they may not bond until the following spring — and they spend the winter in between vulnerable at every edge. That is the whole reason the practical season here runs from about May to October, and the reason a crew offering a November install is either hand-sealing every course by hand or hoping you never find out.
How the queue forms, and how to get ahead of it
The calendar fills from the middle out. February and March are quiet — the ice has just finished showing people which roofs have problems, but few homeowners act until the weather turns. April and May are when everyone calls at once. By July the good crews are booked into autumn, and the quotes reflect it. A homeowner who gathers three quotes in late winter is choosing among contractors; a homeowner who calls in July is choosing among whoever answers.
The practical sequence: have the roof evaluated right after the thaw, gather quotes in March, sign for a slot in the first half of the season, and treat the ventilation corrections as part of the same job rather than a later project. On a street where a whole plat is coming due at once, being a season ahead of the neighbours is worth real money — and the neighbours’ finished jobs are the most useful price benchmark you will find.
Next step: Compare quotes line by line
A no-cost look offered by a firm that also sells replacements is a sales visit, not an inspection — sometimes a perfectly honest one, but the incentive is what it is. If the answer will steer thousands of dollars, pay for the answer.
